1. Proper Brushing

The first and foremost problem we find with patients is that they do not know how to brush properly. Remember, when you are brushing you teeth you should be brushing at a 45 degree angle near the gum line. Make sure to brush your teeth, gum, and tongue as they are all important. You should be brushing with a back and forth, up and down motion. Brushing your tongue is important because it will help with bad breath. Additionally, you can brush the roof of your mouth to remove excess bacteria that may be there.

2. Don’t Press Too Hard

Did you know that if you brush too hard it is bad for you? Some people think that they can overcompensate for the lost brushing by pressing hard, but it simply doesn’t work that way. Brushing too hard can damage the root of the teeth by wear and tear. Once your roots are exposed they are sensitive and can wear much quicker.

3. Flossing once a day

Flossing is a great tool because it can get in the little areas of your mouth that your tooth brush cannot reach. For example, your tooth brush cannot get in between your teeth effectively enough to get rid of all the plaque. Flossing will get the plaque in between the teeth. There also may be left over food, bacteria and other such particles that are stuck in between your teeth and will be removed with flossing.

4. Watch What You Consume

Alcohol, coffee, tea, sugary drinks, and sodas are all examples of what you should not have excessively. You will deteriorate your teeth by drinking sodas and sugary drinks, as well as staining them with most of these drinks. You can experience discoloured teeth, tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath.  When you are choosing a drink, it is always best to pick water or milk. Milk will help build stronger teeth because of the calcium.

This is an interesting one that some of our patients are currently doing. The vinegar helps remove stains and makes your teeth whiter than they were. Vinegar, which is a strong substance, will also kill bacteria in your mouth and gums, helping prevent diseases.

8. Mouth Wash

Mouth wash is a great tool to help keep your breath fresh. Here is a pro-tip: lick your palm, smell it while its wet. Do you smell something? Take a sugar free breath mint. Remember, when you go to your local store for mouth wash, look for something that is alcohol free. Alcohol will dehydrate your mouth and could backfire with bacteria entering your mouth.

9. Chew Gum

Did you know that chewing sugar free and aspartame free gum can help protect your gums? It helps by increasing saliva in your mouth which will decrease the bacteria. Additionally, the aspartame allows you to stay hydrated.

10. Don’t Use Tobacco

Smoking is one of the biggest problems in horrible oral health hygiene. Not only does it stain teeth, but it increases the risk of many diseases, including cancer and gum disease. Smoking as well as chewing tobacco should not be engaged with if you are looking for great oral health hygiene.
